It looks like The Vampire Diaries may be one step closer to ensuring actress Nina Dobrev returns to tie things up before the series comes to a close!

During The CW’s TCAs press event on Thursday (August 11), network president Mark Pedowitz addressed the possibility of Dobrev returning to The Vampire Diaries to reprirse her role as Elena Gilbert one final time.

According to E! News, Pedowitz told reporters in attendance that The CW is currently in talks with Dobrev with regards to bringing her back to the series.

“There are discussions going on with Nina, we’d love to have her back,” revealed Pedowitz.

The CW exec also assured everyone that should Dobrev not return, showrunner Julie Plec is already working on an amazing finale that’ll leave everyone satisfied.

“Hopefully she’ll be back, but should it not work out, Julie has planned out a great series finale for fans,” said Pedowitz.

It’s great to know that Plec has a backup plan just in case Dobrev isn’t able to come back. Even so, given the fact that the showrunner has made it clear in the past that she’s always envisioned the finale to include Elena, we’d love to see her original vision come to fruition!

The Vampire Diaries returns to The CW in the fall.
