The recently released trailer for Stranger Things season 2 may be straightforward, but don’t let its simplicity fool you.
According to series creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, fans should pay close attention to the clip — which features episode titles for the new season — if they’re looking for clues as to where the show is set to go next.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer brothers revealed that the concept for the trailer was their idea. While the showrunners cautioned that some of the titles may change between now and when the second season finally premieres on Netflix, they also stressed that each was specifically chosen in order to “provide some hint of where [the show was] going.”
“Even if they aren’t final chapter titles, everything in that teaser is major. But they’re ambiguous enough that no one is going to be able to figure it out,” said Matt. “Some of the fan theories online are amazing. Most are wrong, but I’ve read a few that are right or very close…some of those people have figured stuff out based off of the chapter titles.”
It sounds as though we’ve all got to go back to the drawing board if we want to crack the mystery of what’s up next for the inhabitants of Hawkins, Indiana.
Stranger Things returns to Netflix for season 2 sometime in 2017.
