Harry Potter fans got more than they all bargained for in the best way possible when J.K. Rowling announced Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would in fact consist of five movies — but no one was as shocked by the news as star Eddie Redmayne himself!

Redmayne stopped by the Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday (Nov. 2) where he revealed that he was just as surprised as Potter fans were to discover Newt’s story would span across five films.

“[It] was news to us!” Redmayne told DeGeneres.

According to the actor, he and the rest of the cast didn’t even know she would be showing up at the fan event where Rowling made the big announcement to the world.

“She then announced that she’d always had a specific story that she wanted to tell— much further beyond than Newt and his case. But we didn’t realize it was going to be five films,” continued Redmayne. “There was a sort of very shocked moment when all of the cast, the four of us, were sort of a-gasp, but so excited.”

That’s a pretty huge bombshell to drop on your main cast— especially when they were under the impression that the series would only last three films! That being said, we love that Redmayne is just as excited about getting to continue Newt’s journey for five films as we are to experience Rowling’s new saga!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters on Nov. 19.
