It looks like The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will have to carry on without one of its fan favorite characters.

The hit musical comedy series bid farewell to Greg actor Santino Fontana, who’s declaration of love for Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) served as his grand adieu to West Covina.

As fans of the series know, Greg is now off to pursue new adventures as a student at Emory University, but viewers hoping to see the bartender pop up here and there as  season 2 progresses shouldn’t hold their breath.

According to Vulture, who spoke with Fontana about his final episode, the actor only ever signed on to appear in one season of the show.

“The CW was kind enough to give me a one-year contract because of what I thought would be best for my family and my life [in New York],” explained Fontana. “I never, ever in a million years thought they would let me do that.”

Despite the fact that viewers shouldn’t expect Greg to pop in for a visit this season, there’s still a possibility that he could return somewhere down the line.

“It’s definitely something we’re open to,” showrunner and co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna told Vulture. “It’s not something that’s part of the immediate plan of her arc, but never say never.”

In the mean time, it sounds like Fontana is keeping pretty busy when it comes to upcoming projects. Fans of the actor will soon be able to catch him in the thriller Impossible Monsters, and in the upcoming rom-com, Galileo.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs Fridays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
