Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them may have been well received by fans far and wide, but that hasn’t stopped Harry Potter fans from shedding light on a few unanswered questions with regards to the plot.

Perhaps one of the questions at the forefront of many Potter Heads’ minds revolves around Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his wand. Specifically, fans are curious to know how Newt could still be in possession of his wand when we know, thanks to Graves (Colin Farrell), that he was “kicked out of Hogwarts for endangering human life with a beast.”

Newt’s storyline at Hogwarts is incredibly reminiscent of Hagrid’s. In Chamber of Secrets we discover that Hagrid was wrongly expelled from Hogwarts for housing the giant spider, Aragog. The faculty was under the impression that Hagrid’s pet was terrorizing the school and killing Muggle-borns when it was in fact Salazar Slytherin’s Basilisk. Regardless, Hagrid was expelled, and when he was, his wand was taken away and snapped in half, though Hagrid has hinted many times that he’s still got the pieces concealed in his trusty pink umbrella. The question, however, still remains: if Newt was expelled, how does he still have his wand?

One fan took to Twitter to ask author J.K. Rowling just that. Of course, Rowling can’t give away all her secrets, so instead of explaining, the author simply left us with a cryptic message.

“All will become clear,” assured Rowling, according to Yahoo Movies UK. “Trust me.”

It sounds as though Rowling’s got a firm plan as to how she’ll explain somewhere down the line, but that doesn’t make us any less curious.

While the film cues us in to the fact that Newt was expelled, the original Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book, released by Rowling in 2001, reveals that Newt did in fact graduate from Hogwarts before going on to work for the Ministry of Magic. Perhaps he was cleared of all charges and that’s why he’s able to wield a wand now?

Or perhaps he found a way to repair his wand and replace its core. We know for a fact that Newt has quite a few Bowtruckles in his possession, and Bowtruckles are known to serve as guardians for the trees in which they dwell— trees, whose wood is of wand quality. Given his penchant for capturing and connecting with magical creatures, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Newt harvesting a piece of wand-quality wood, and configuring a wand for himself with a brand new magical core.

While it’s fun to theorize over how Newt could still have his wand despite being expelled from Hogwarts, we’re definitely looking forward to the day when Rowling finally lets us in on just how it happened!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is in theaters now.
