Tyler Perry was presented with a very special honor at People’s Choice Awards 2017. The famed actor and star of the Madea films was the recipient of this year’s Favorite Humanitarian Award.
Perry was honored on Wednesday (Jan. 18) night for his many charitable initiatives, including his work with the Tyler Perry Foundation. Through the foundation, Perry has donated millions of dollars to organizations such as Feeding America, the NAACP, Charity Water, and many more, in an effort to help eradicate homelessness, support civil rights causes, and aid survivors of devastating natural disasters.
The Good Place actress Kristen Bell was on hand to present Perry with the award, saying that she’s admired Perry for years.
“He had humble beginnings, but Tyler has built an empire, and he has always paid it forward,” said Bell. “I think we’re all incredibly grateful to have someone like him that can teach us to grow and give back.”
After Bell’s heartfelt speech, Perry took the stage to accept the honor, delivering a heartfelt speech about why it’s important to do our part to help others around us.
“No matter how dark it gets, we all have to be the light for each other. You turn on your phones, you turn on your televisions, you’re met with darkness— you don’t need to search for it, it searches for you,” said Perry. “You have to be careful not to let it into your heart…if you let it in, you can become cynical…what is so important is that we all understand that no matter what we’re going through, we’re going through it together.”
In addition to his beautiful speech, Perry also gave thanks to Enterprise for donating $100,000 to Perry’s charity of choice in honor of being announced this year’s Favorite Humanitarian recipient. Perry has chosen the Global Medical Relief Fund for Children as his charity of choice and we’re sure the money will be put to good use there!
