Sorry, Titanic fans. James Cameron just put a huge damper on everyone who’s thought for years that Jack and Rose could have both survived the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean after the infamous ship sank on that cold, April night.
For years, fans had wondered if perhaps there could have been a way for our favorite star-crossed lovers to have both gone on to live a happy life together after the Titanic sank. After all, there seemed to have been enough room on that makeshift raft for two!
The idea of how both Jack and Rose could have survived was even the topic of discussion on a popular MythBusters episode in 2012 where the show proved that Jack could have lived long enough for the lifeboats to come if he had just tied Rose’s lifejacket to the bottom of the raft in order to allow it to withstand their combined weight.
But despite the power of science, director James Cameron is sticking to his guns when he says there’s no way Jack could have survived alongside Rose. In fact, the Titanic director recently debunked the MythBusters theory in a recent interview with The Daily Beast.
“You’re Jack, you’re in the water that’s 28 degrees, your brain is starting to get hypothermia. MythBusters asks you to now go take off your life vest, take hers off, swim underneath this thing, attach it in some way that it won’t just wash out two minutes later,” argued Cameron. “That’s going to take you five to 10 minutes, so by the time you come back up, you’re already dead.”
In fact, Cameron still stands by the fact that Jack’s best shot at surviving was to keep his upper body out of the water, just as we see him do in the film, and hope the boats get there in time to pull them both to safety.
As much as we want to believe in the cold, hard facts of science, we have to admit that Cameron may have a point there. It’d be much harder to MacGyver a floatable raft when your body can’t think past how cold the water your’e wading in is.
Guess we’ll have to shelve all of our theories about how things could have turned out differently for Jack and Rose for now!
