Mary Stuart Masterson has been acting since before she was ten years old, and thanks to memorable roles in classics like Fried Green Tomatoes, Benny & Joon, and Some Kind of Wonderful, Masterson has made a name for herself as one of the most iconic actresses in Hollywood.

But despite her success over the years, the actress revealed in a recent episode of the Little Known Facts Podcast that if she had to do it all over again and start her career today in age, she doesn’t think she’d be famous.

So what’s the difference between trying to become an actress today in age versus when Masterson was coming up? According to the NCIS star, it all comes down to social media.

“I don’t think I’d be an actress [today] because I’m not good at self promotion,” confessed Masterson of the difference between starting in the industry now versus when she did.

According to Masterson social media has allowed aspiring artists the opportunity to carve out their own paths to the top in ways that she never could have imagined when she was first starting out. For Masterson, finding success was more about honing in on the craft of acting than understanding the tool social media can play in your rise to the top.

“When I came up, the way I learned was about playing a role from the inside out and understanding, investigating the integrity of the story and the role you play inside of that story,” continued Masterson. “If none of that is even where you’re beginning from, I fail that test.”
