They always gave us #friendshipgoals, but, luckily, One Tree Hill’s Lucas and Haley never went after that #relationshipgoals status.

Never crossing that line into relationship territory only made us appreciate Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Haley’s (Bethany Joy Lenz) unique friendship even more. That’s because so many TV besties end up getting together at some point, whether just shortly as a mistake or in the end when they realize they are meant to be together, but these best friends stayed strictly platonic and strictly adorable.

The one thing we could always count on during the long-running WB/CW drama was the friendship between Haley and Lucas. Even with Murray’s character leaving at the end of season six, we always knew that they would be best friends no matter what. But, why exactly did the two of them never become more than just friends? They are both smart, beautiful, and kind. Plus, they know each other better than anyone else ever would.

Apparently a little thing called “chemistry” was needed and, according to Lenz, they just didn’t have it.

“I just don’t think we had chemistry,” Lenz told People’s Choice at the InsideOTH Convention last July. “I think from the moment that I arrived, I had a connection with Chad that was much more brotherly than it was an attraction that you would have towards somebody that you had a crush on. I just always felt that way about him. So, I feel like maybe that’s just what came off on camera and it just didn’t ever come to fruition.”

While the writer-jock and singer-tutorgirl never stepped outside of the friend zone throughout the series, according to Lenz, that might not have been the original plan for the relationship.

“I mean, I think that [a romantic relationship] might’ve been the original way they were planning on taking the story, but also, there was some unexpected chemistry with James [Lafferty], too.”

Oh yes, we know.

“It was also every kind of nerdy high schooler’s dream that the star jock is interested in her and I just don’t think they anticipated how many girls would really connect to and relate to that story,” Lenz continued. “So, I think between the chemistry that James and I had…Which again, with James I felt super brotherly toward as well because he was 17, so I mean. But, I don’t know, it was just a different dynamic I guess.”

Good thing for Haley, though, because this way she had not one, but TWO beautiful and constant relationships throughout the series.

As for Murray, his character wasn’t lacking drama in the love department, between Peyton (Hilarie Burton) and Brooke (Sophia Bush), and then Lindsey (Michaela McManus). Even so, that normally wouldn’t stop a showrunner from throwing the best friend into the mix, something the OTH actor’s well aware of, but he’s “so glad it didn’t” turn out that way.

“You never see it,” Murray told People’s Choice at the same event. “It’s so rare that you don’t see two best friends have some type of intimate moment, but we didn’t. And I’m glad. I don’t know why, I think it was just really smart writing by Mark [Schwahn].”

We agree, Chad, we most definitely agree.
