Now this is something we didn’t see coming. J.R.R Tolkien will be featured in the season 2 finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

While the Lord of the Rings actor himself will not be on the show, since he passed away in 1973, Jack Turner will portray him on screen.

Marc Guggenheim, the show’s executive producer, confirmed the news on Twitter last month. “Legends of Tomorrow’s season finale enters its last week of production today,” he wrote tweeted.

With the tweet, Guggenheim posted a list of actors and the characters they are playing in the upcoming “Aruba” episode.

As you can see Turner is in fact playing J.R.R. Tolkien, and based on Guggenheim’s earlier talks with Entertainment Weekly, the role has been a long time coming.

“The Tolkien idea actually was an idea we’ve had for the entire season,” Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly during a set visit. “Very early on, when we were planning out season 2, we made a list of fun time periods that we want to visit, and the writing staff had this idea that we could do a Lord of the Rings homage in the trenches of World War I.”

Even though the finale episode doesn’t air until April 4, we are SO excited to see this legendary author brought to life in the DC universe.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs on Tuesdays on The CW.
