The Fate of the Furious may have only hit theaters on Friday (April 14), but it’s already breaking some big records.
According to BBC, the eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise is killing it overseas, taking in an estimated $532.5 million globally. This is HUGE because it now tops the list of most box office sales internationally for an opening weekend.
The publication also revealed that The Fate of the Furious knocked out Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which garnered $529 million international box office sales in its opening weekend.
It might not be a big difference between the two movies’ numbers, but it’s pretty impressive that not only is The Fate of the Furious now a record holder, but it is more successful worldwide than a Star Wars film — at least in its first weekend in theaters.
That being said, the eighth installment of the car-thrilling action film is NOT up in the United States. In fact, it is down in sales for its opening weekend in comparison to Furious 7, which hit theaters in 2015.
Since there are clearly a lot of fans out there of this franchise it’s good to know that there are two more movies on the way from the Fast & Furious family. The international market is going to be SO excited when the final two installments drop in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
