This post contains spoilers from Thursday night’s (April 20) episode of Scandal.

Scandal is known for its twists and turns, but this is one we really didn’t see coming.

On last night’s episode (April 20), the Shonda Rhimes drama said a surprise goodbye to one of its own: Elizabeth North (Portia de Rossi). In true Scandal fashion, Lizzie’s last hurrah was anything but peaceful — in fact, the character met a pretty brutal end.

In a statement, de Rossi — who joined Scandal in 2014 —explained that she decided to leave the show to focus on another part of her career.

“I am incredibly grateful for my time here at Scandal!,” De Rossi said in a statement as reported by Deadline. “I will miss playing Elizabeth North but I’ve made the decision to focus on a business opportunity. Shonda, Betsy and the cast have been incredibly supportive of my decision. I will always love my Scandal family. I’ll be watching!”

Rhimes also weighed in about de Rossi’s exit, and had nothing but praise for the actress.

“I have been a fan of Portia’s for years and it was an honor to have her join our Scandal family,” Rhimes said in a statement. “Portia infused Liz North with a smart powerful vulnerable soul while also making the humor sing — and that brought all of us in the writers room a lot of joy. If I could keep her forever, I would — but kidnapping is illegal. Besides, I am incredibly impressed with the vision she has for her creative future. I wish her all the best.”

Meanwhile, Scandal star Kerry Washington, aka Olivia Pope herself, took to Instagram to post a behind-the-scenes (and very spoilery!) picture of de Rossi’s very bloody final shot.

“Bloody beautiful,” she wrote, adding “sorry for the spoilers but this is what live tweeting looks like.”

What do you think about this surprise Scandal exit? Will you miss Liz’s presence on the show?
