Guardians of the Galaxy almost turned out very different.
While the film featured a number of memorable characters, it turns out that one of our favorites wasn’t actually supposed to survive until the end.
In an interview with Screen Crush, actress Karen Gillan revealed that her character Nebula — the intense henchwoman who works for Ronan the Accuser — was originally supposed to get the axe. However, as the movie went on, Nebula became much more complex — and now she’s returning for the sequel.
“I thought, ‘Okay, so that’s going to be it for her,’ at one point,” Gillan told Screen Crush about finding out about her character’s planned death. “Then suddenly they rewrote her ending — and then they rewrote it again, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay. What’s going on?’ I was really shocked when I got to come back and as part of the team in the next movie. That was amazing! I definitely didn’t expect that.”
According to Gillian, the sequel will explore fans will learn much more about Nebula’s tragic backstory in the sequel, and her sisterly bond with Gamora will be more of a focus.
Gillan also revealed that she never shot a death scene for Nebula, but she did shoot an alternate ending that showed the character alive.
“We never got to that point. As soon as we would get near to it there would be a new script,” she explained. “Oh! There was one different ending that she had where they kept her alive and then we re-shot that as well.”
Although we don’t know how she was supposed to get killed off, we’re happy to report that she didn’t. We really want to see more of her in the sequel!
Could you imagine Guardians without Nebula?
