When it comes to important dates in the Harry Potter series, May 2 is up there as one of the most memorable. In fact, the date is important because it makes the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts and Harry’s defeat of Lord Voldemort.

Every year since she’s been active on Twitter, author J.K. Rowling has taken to social media on this special day in Potter history to apologize for one of the brave witches and wizards we lost that fated day toward the end of what would have been Harry’s seventh year at Hogwarts.

In the past, Rowling’s apologized for killing the likes of Fred Weasley and Remus Lupin, but it’s safe to say that the character she’s picked this year is a bit more polarizing.

“OK, here it is, Please don’t start flame wars over it, but this year I’d like to apologize for killing (whispers)….Snape. *runs for cover*” tweeted Rowling early Tuesday morning.

It’s not surprising that Rowling has a soft spot for the moody potions master. Despite how much Harry despised him, in the end, the Boy Who Lived is able to make peace with Snape after he comes to the realization that he was in fact the bravest man he ever knew. Harry even goes as far as to name his youngest son, Albus Severus, after Snape himself.

Harry might have forgiven Snape, but it’s clear the fandom is still divided when it comes to the Hogwarts professor. He’s incredibly hard to love— especially when you consider the fact that he was downright nasty to Harry just because of his long-held grudge against Harry’s father, James.

Even so, Snape’s undying love for Harry’s mother, Lily, is ultimately what drives Snape to helping Dumbledore protect Harry on more than a few occasions. And while some fans feel as though that cancels out the bad, others aren’t so quick to forgive.
