Get excited Game of Thrones fans, this is the news you’ve all been waiting for: a spinoff of the popular drama might actually be in the works.
On Thursday (May 4), HBO announced in a statement (via CNN) that deals had been closed to “explore different time periods of George R.R. Martin’s vast and rich universe,” with four writers.
This is major news seeing as in September, GOT showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss shut down rumors of their return for anything resembling a prequel.
“It’s a great world that George created. It’s a very rich world. I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us, this is it,” Benioff told reporters at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards via TV Line, talking about both himself and fellow showrunner, Weiss.
Despite their earlier statement, the show’s original dynamic duo of showrunners, will also be on board with the spinoff process, as executive producers, the network revealed.
According to the statement, George R.R. Martin, the creator and author of all of the Game of Thrones novels, will be involved in the script writing, which again is reason to celebrate.
Could you imagine another look at the world of Westeros? Could we see a show solely about Sansa Stark, or her little sis, Arya?
We’re still rooting for a possible prequel as well featuring Ned Stark, since we really only got him for like, three episodes, which is NOT enough.
Although this spinoff news is wonderful, fans shouldn’t expect a speedy route to another show or two from the GOT world.
“There is no set timetable for these projects,” the network said. “We’ll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in.”
Not only do we get two more seasons of the original series — even if the last season is only six episodes — but also now the idea of one or more spinoffs is a serious possibility. What’s not to be happy about?
Season 7 of Game of Thrones premieres on July 16, 2017 on HBO.
