Calling all American Idol fans, the show is coming back… but should it be?
On Tuesday (May 9), ABC announced during Good Morning America that it’s going to be the new home of the iconic singing competition. The show will now return for a 16th season on ABC instead of FOX where it’s been for the past 15 seasons.
“American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon,” Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement via Variety. “ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams.”
While this is good news for Idol fans, a lot of people were prepared to say goodbye the reality show after FOX marked season 15 as the “Farewell Season.”
There is currently no word on who will host the newly revived series, but Ryan Seacrest does work for ABC on Live, so maybe he will make the jump and do both?
That being said, American Idol coming back at all is a gutsy move for the network, after its decreased viewership over the past couple of years. In its final season on FOX, Variety reports that the show had 9.1 million viewers on average, which sounds like a lot but in its prime the series was getting 36.4 million views.
