ABC is getting in on the live-action musical action!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network announced ahead of their Upfront presentation on Tuesday (May 16), that they’ve got a special live musical production in the works centered around the 1989 animated classic, The Little Mermaid.

Unlike productions of Hairspray, The Sound of Music, and more that we’ve seen in the past from other networks, ABC is putting a bit of a twist on their musical special.

Billed as The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live, the upcoming special is set to blend the 1989 animated version of the film we know and love with live musical performances. As diehard Disney fans will undoubtedly remember, Disney toyed with the idea of blending live action performances with animated film at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl last June.

It’ll be interesting to see what new technology they use to blend animation with live performances of Alan Menken’s timeless songs, but until then, we can’t help but think about which star ABC could be tapping to bring Ariel to life alongside her animated counterpart!

Though we’re sure casting for the production is still far off, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to share a few of our picks for who we think could totally kill it as Ariel. While some of our picks don’t have Ariel’s signature red locks, we still feel as though they could knock it out of the park if given the chance to be apart of ABC’s upcoming musical special.

Check out our list of who we think would do a great job of bringing Ariel to life below:

Dove Cameron

Dove Cameron is no stranger to live musical productions. In fact, anyone who tuned into last year’s Hairspray will undoubtedly agree that she killed it as mean girl Amber! With that in mind, we’d love to see what Cameron could do with a larger role in a musical production like that of Ariel in ABC’s upcoming special.

Auli’i Cravalho

If Auli’i Cravalho’s performance in Moana wasn’t enough to convince you that she’s got some serious pipes, we’re positive her stunning rendition of “How Far I’ll Go at the 2017 Oscars definitely did the trick. We already know she’s got what it takes to carry a film, so we’re sure helping bring Ariel to life would be a total walk in the park for her.

Madelaine Petsch

We haven’t been able to take our eyes off Madeline Petsch on The CW’s Riverdale where she portrays Cheryl Blossom. As much as we’ve loved seeing Petsch play a character with lots of deep dark family secrets, we think it’d be fun to see what she could do as Ariel. Like Cheryl, Ariel is incredibly strong willed. Plus, Petsch totally gets bonus points for being a natural redhead!

Hailee Steinfeld

Thanks to the time she’s spent with the Barden Bellas, we know for a fact that Hailee Steinfeld can hold her own when it comes to both singing and acting, so including her on our list of who we think might make for a great Ariel is sort of a no-brainer. Pitch Perfect aside, however, Steinfeld also brought us an incredibly emotional performance in 2016’s The Edge of Seventeen. Like Steinfeld’s character in the movie, Nadine, Ariel’s also trying to figure out where she fits into the world. We’re sure if tapped, Steinfeld could bring the same kind of intensity she brought in her last film to Ariel in ABC’s production.

Jasmine Cephas Jones

Hamilton fans are well aware of Jasmine Cephas Jones’ star power thanks to the time she spent playing Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash hit musical about the founding father without a father. While Jones recently had a guest-starring role on HBO’s Girls, she’s largely been focusing on her musical career. We’d love to see her take part in something like ABC’s Little Mermaid, if only so we can see more of her on the small screen!

Who would you love to see assume the role of Ariel in ABC’s upcoming The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live?
