TV musicals, both live and tapped, have been everywhere recently. There was the ultra-successful, Grease Live! followed by the hit Hairspray Live!. There was also the remake of Rocky Horror Picture Show on FOX, and just yesterday, Dirty Dancing was re-imagined as a musical for ABC.
Despite the fact that Dirty Dancing got mixed reviews for changing things up a little too much from the iconic 1987 movie it’s based on, there are a LOT of other iconic titles coming to TV as musicals, and we can’t wait to see them. Check out the three upcoming remakes that we’re most excited about below:
Bye Bye Birdie! (NBC)
NBC is set for a number of musicals this year — but the one at the top of our watchlist is Bye Bye Birdie!, which began as a Broadway musical in 1960 and later became a feature film in 1963. One of the most iconic musicals ever created, Bye Bye Birdie! follows a songwriter-agent named Albert and his sweetheart, Rosie, who sing and dance and do a big TV performance before he is drafted to the army. The TV remake is set to debut in December 2017, with Jennifer Lopez taking on the role of Rosie. The rest of the cast has yet to be formally announced, but with Lopez on board you know it’s going to be good.
After Grease Live!, FOX is upping its game with two upcoming musical remakes, but the one we’re most excited about is its adaptation of Rent, which we all know and love as both a Broadway production and a 2005 movie. The TV musical doesn’t yet have a release date, but we’re already gearing up to sing along to “Light My Candle,” “Out Tonight,” and of course “Rent.”
The Little Mermaid (ABC)
Following its Dirty Dancing remake, ABC has set its sights on Disney’s The Little Mermaid for its first live musical production. Seriously, we can barely contain our excitement for this one. Ariel, Ursula, Prince Eric and Sebastian all on live TV singing “Under the Sea”? What more could you want?! Mark your calendars because The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live! airs on October 3, 2017!
