Edge of Tomorrow is getting a sequel, but fans shouldn’t expect anything more.

During the latest episode of Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast from MTV, director Doug Liman talked all about the Edge of Tomorrow franchise and his goal for the second installment.

He described the second film — the original starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt — as the next film in a “two-movie franchise” and a “sequel that’s a prequel.”

As for what the film will be about, Liman already has a great idea for the film, which is currently being called Live Die Repeat.

“What people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger, and I’m like, ‘No, a sequel should be smaller,'” Liman told Horowitz during the interview. “You did the first film as the ad campaign for the sequel. Now you don’t need as much action.”

The creator explained that he wants the sequel (or technically the prequel) to be less about aliens and fighting and more about the depth of Cage (played by Cruise), Rita (played by Blunt), and a yet-to-revealed third character.

For all of the Edge of Tomorrow fans out there, you can breathe easy, because Liman also revealed that the second movie will pick up where the 2014 film left off. In case you forgot, that means that we will see Cage and Rita as they meet for the first time… again.

However, Liman further explained that the movie “doesn’t keep going forward because we screw with time, because the aliens screw with time.”

What do you think about an Edge of Tomorrow prequel? Are you ready for more from this franchise?
