Alyson Hannigan is convinced the How I Met Your Mother finale would have been received much more positively had one thing been done differently.
During an interview with News.com.au, Hannigan, who played Lily Aldrin on the CBS sitcom for 9 seasons, revealed that her biggest regret regarding the season finale is that the episode’s original runtime was edited down before it was aired — leaving a ton of scenes and story on the cutting room floor.
“I was bummed they didn’t just make it a two-hour season-ender, so they would get to show certain parts [that were cut],” said Hannigan about the show which starred Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, Josh Radnor, Jason Segal, and Cristin Milioti.
The actress said that the original plan for the finale — which still continues to divide fans even three years after it aired — included scenes that she thinks would have added some more context to some of the bigger twists featured in the hour.
“The table read for the finale was so good, so right, but it was also like 14 hours long,” she said, explaining why the finale was ultimately shortened. “So when I actually saw the final version of the show, I was like ‘they cut out everything!’”
If it’s any consolation — to both Hannigan and HIMYM fans — there’s a chance the sitcom could get the chance to make amends. The studio behind the series — 20th Century Fox — is is very much open to a revival.
“At some point, I would hope we would have the opportunity to reunite those characters and tell new stories if [creators] Craig [Thomas] and Carter [Bays] have the opportunity to do that,” Dana Walden told reporters last month via E! News.
