Dove Cameron is currently the “it girl” when it comes to the Disney Channel and her role in the Descendants franchise is partially responsible for that amazing title. She’s Mal aka Maleficent’s daughter, so of course she’s the girl to watch.
During a recent interview with The Laughing Place, the Liv & Maddie star teamed up with the author of the Descendants book series, Melissa De La Cruz, to talk about her involvement with in the TV movies and why it means so much to her. Unlike so many fairy tale focused series or films, the Descendants films and books were allowed to build upon and change the stories we all grew up with, which is a big part of why Cameron is so excited to be part of the project.
“Because Disney Channel is it’s own thing, it’s own beast, so to be told you’re involved in the classics is like, there’s nothing more delicious than that,” Cameron told The Laughing Place‘s Marshal Knight when discussing the fact that the Descendants movies were actually approved by Disney Corporate to embellish on the original tales.“I think that’s why we’re all so invested in the series and the franchise itself because it’s the first time!”
The fact that Cameron’s character isn’t “watered down” is another reason she’s so passionate about the project.
“I love a complicated girl. I love a girl who doesn’t know who she is and then she knows who she is. I think Mal is the ultimate heroine, because she’s real and she’s fiery,” Cameron concluded.
This is SO spot on! Mal is so fiery and fierce and that’s why we love her as the lead in Descendants, and can’t wait to see her back in Auradon in Descendants 2.
Descendants 2 premieres on July 21 on Disney Channel as well as Disney XD, ABC, Freeform and Lifetime.
