Demi Lovato will always be a Disney darling in our minds, having made her mark on Sonny With a Chance and the Camp Rock movies, but that doesn’t mean she’d do it all over again.

Okay, technically, Lovato has no issues with her career path, but during an interview with Variety at Cannes Lions on Monday, the actress revealed the one thing she would’ve done a little differently.

“I wouldn’t start out that young if I could do it over again,” Lovato told Variety about her childhood stardom. “I don’t regret anything. It was difficult to transition from a child star to transforming into a mainstream artist. It’s something that is very challenging.”

Lovato began her career at age 7 on Barney & Friends, and then propelled to super stardom as a Disney Channel favorite in the mid ‘00s with her own TV show, and numerous Disney Channel Original Movies, like Princess Protection Program, with fellow Barney & Friends alum, Selena Gomez.

“You have to find your identity. For so long you’ve been molded into something and now you’re expected to figure out who you are very fast in front of the entire world,” Lovato explained about the pitfalls of starting out so young. “It’s definitely has been difficult, but it’s been a learning experience. I am still figuring out who I am every day.”

Despite having to reinvent herself as a solo artist and find her sound away from her childhood persona and Disney Channel shadow, Lovato has definitely earned her way to the top in the pop music field, and we love her even more for taking so much time to find herself… and encouraging others to do the same.
