We’ve always known that Archie can be quite the hero, but apparently Riverdale star KJ Apa is pretty hardcore himself!

The actor recently revealed that the moment in the season 1 finale when Archie punches his hand through ice to save another redheaded Riverdale teen (resulting in him having to wear a cast later in the episode) wasn’t exactly just for TV. Apa previously teased on Twitter that he broke his hand on set, but in a new interview released by TVLine, the actor is giving us more about what actually went down.

“That was a gnarly day of shooting, I’ll tell you that much,” Apa told TVLine at The CW’s Upfront presentation in New York in regards to hurting his hand on set. “I wasn’t really punching the ice, but I got a little bit too excited.”

Although the New Zealand actor wasn’t punching ice like we saw on the finale, he did do some real punching, which led to his actual broke hand.

“I was punching a foam mat… [that was] sitting on the ice. It was cold, so I didn’t really feel it. It wasn’t until 20 minutes after that I realized I broke my hand,” he explained. “I didn’t tell anyone.”

Wow, what a trooper!

It seems like the rest of that episode, which showed Archie with a cast on and barely being able to play the guitar at the town’s Jubilee celebration wasn’t all for show. Who knew?!
