Zayn Malik may be releasing new music soon!

In its profile of the former One Direction member, the Evening Standard reports that Malik is currently in New York “finishing the final songs on his forthcoming second album.”

The fact that Malik has made so much progress on his sophomore effort is great news for fans who have been waiting for a follow-up to his solo debut, Mind of Mine, which dropped in March 2016.

In speaking to the Evening Standard, Malik opened up about how going solo has helped him build more confidence.

“You have a certain sense of control, which is nice,” said Malik. “And I’m more confident in my ability and what I want to give to my fans. I can think of people coming out to see me perform as a positive thing now, rather than something I am dreading.”

The singer, who – according to the report — will be touring his second album worldwide, also talked about struggling to maintain a sense of privacy.

“In New York, you can sometimes get out in the early hours of the morning for a walk,” he says. “But there’s no underground parking here, no escape routes. So they’re going to get pictures, they’re going to find you. In LA [his own usual US base], it’s more catered to these things — you’ve got back entrances and that.”

While there’s no word yet on the direction of his second album, the singer told Dazed in an interview last year that he’s “trying to do more and more.”

“I’m excited to get more involved in every way that I can. Whether it’s producing or the creative for my stage direction, I just want to get down to every detail. That’s my progression, learning my craft as a solo artist. I’m kind of itching a little bit. I want to work. I’ve learned over four or five years that it’s good to work because you’re earning, not spending,” Malik told Dazed.
