Castle alum Stana Katic is headed back to TV — but don’t expect to always love her new character.

Katic arrived at the 2017 Monte Carlo TV Festival in Monaco last week where she talked to Monaco-Matin about what drew her to her new show, Absentia, and the complexities of her new role.

In the series, Katic portrays Emily Byrne, an FBI agent who disappears while hunting down a Boston serial killer. The show follows the character as she resurfaces six years later without her memory and a lot of questions.

According to Katic — who wrapped up her 8-season stint as NYPD detective Kate Beckett on Castle last year — her new character is a “survivor” who is multi-faceted — and not necessarily always likable.

“She’s completely imperfect. I think because this is a thriller, because it is a suspense drama, this is a character whose journey you will follow,” the Canadian actress told Monaco-Matin. “You will root for her, you will hate her, you will be afraid of her, you will love her. You will follow her throughout the series while she’s searching for the truth alongside her family and her nearest and dearest.”

The actress said she was drawn to playing a role with so many shades.

“It’s really an extraordinary kind of mix and it was very complex,” said Katic. “And I was excited about playing something like that.”
