It’s been a while since we’ve seen Spider-Man swing onto the big screen so we’re incredibly excited that Marvel has decided to reboot the web-slinger’s saga starting with Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The new take on Peter Parker’s tale is sure to be a wild ride and we can’t wait to watch it unfold over the course of the next few films. To celebrate everyone’s favorite wall-crawling superhero, we’ve put together a few fun facts you probably never knew about Spider-Man: Homecoming. Check them out below!
1. Tom Holland was put through the ringer when he auditioned.
Tom Holland had some huge shoes to fill when he stepped into the role of one of the most beloved superheroes in existence, but according to Yahoo Movies, Marvel added an extra bit of heat during the final leg of auditions. Before landing the role, Holland was asked to screen-test with both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, who play Iron Man and Captain America, respectively. Clearly Holland kept his cool and it paid off!
2. Michael Keaton enjoyed hanging out on set with his young co-star.
Michael Keaton recently took over the official Spider-Man Twitter account where he revealed that he had a lot of fun working with co-star Tom Holland. The seasoned actor even went on to say that his favorite thing about working with Holland was his thoughtful, inquisitive nature. “I really enjoyed being around him and he asks the smartest, best questions as an actor,” said Keaton.
3. Spider-Man may have a new superhero mentor in the future.
Tony Stark might be a huge influence on Spider-Man in the first installment of the latest reboot, but fans shouldn’t expect Iron Man to hang out past Spider-Man: Homecoming. According to The Hollywood Reporter (h/t ComicBook.com), Robert Downey Jr. isn’t set to reprise his role past the first Spider-Man film. Though Iron Man’s absence will be felt, the good news is Marvel plans to fill the void by featuring a different superhero. There’s no telling who it’ll be yet, but we’re looking forward to finding out!
4. Tom Holland found out that he got the part on social media.
Most actors recall getting a call from the studio when they score the biggest role of their lives. For Holland, news that he’d landed the role of Spider-Man actually came from Instagram. “I was in my bed scrolling through Instagram. It had been about a month since my audition. And Marvel just posted a photo saying go to our website and find out who the next Spider-Man is,” Holland told The Hollywood Reporter according to EW. “I went on the Marvel website on my computer and there it was: The new Spider-Man is Tom Holland. I went ballistic, like absolutely nuts.”
5. The newest incarnation of Spider-Man is the most emotive yet.
As fun as it was in the comics to see Peter build his own Spidey suits— especially when things went wrong— there are tons of advantages that come with Tony Stark building one for you. That’s probably why the suit Holland gets to wear in Spider-Man: Homecoming comes equipped with more secret gadgets than you can imagine. One of the most exciting features of the suit, however, are the expressive eyes— something we’ve never seen in previous Spider-Man films. We’ll be excited to see how the suit comes into play in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and how it evolves overtime in future installments.
