The nominees for the 2017 Emmy Awards have officially been revealed and as always, this year’s crop of hopefuls have brought a few surprises!
While we already knew heavy hitter Game of Thrones wouldn’t be among this year’s nominees, the ballot is still stacked with tons of talent. Westworld currently leads the pack this year with a whopping 22 nods. New favorites like The Handmaid’s Tale and Big Little Lies were also frequently featured among this year’s nominees. (You can see the full list of nominees here.)
Here are five things we found most surprising about the 2017 Emmy Award nominations!
1. The cast of This Is Us gets a lot of love, except for…
The NBC series has been touted as one of the best new shows of the year, so it was exciting to see how much of a dent its actors made on the 2017 Emmys ballot. Both Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia received nods for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for their incredible performances. Meanwhile, Chrissy Metz and Ron Cephas Jones were recognized for their supporting roles on the show. That said, there was one surprising name missing from the list. Mandy Moore, who’s performance won many hearts this year, unfortunately did not score a leading actress nomination.
2. There are two Academy Award winners among the Best Actress in a Drama nominees.
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman have successfully conquered the Oscars, and now it looks as though they’re coming for the Emmys! Both actresses received nods in the Best Actress category this year for their work on Big Little Lies, and we’ll be interested to see if either of them takes home top prize.
3. Westworld made a huge splash at this year’s nominations.
HBO’s new sci-fi series is the leader of the pack with a whopping 22 nominations, including nods in the Best Drama category, and Best Actor and Actress categories. Though Game of Thrones missed the cutoff for this year’s nominations, it definitely looks like Westworld is following in the series’ footsteps!
4. There wasn’t much love for CW programming.
In fact, the only CW series to get nominated this year was the delightfully hilarious Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Though this isn’t necessarily surprising as The CW hardly ever gets nominated at the Emmy Awards, we were hoping this year would be different.
5. Anna Chlumsky received her fifth consecutive nomination.
The Emmys pulled of a fun surprise for Anna Chlumsky at this morning’s announcements. Instead of hearing her name announced with the rest of the group, fellow co-announcer Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds) was handed an envelope that congratulated Chlumsky on her fifth consecutive nomination.
The 2017 Emmys will be hosted by Stephen Colbert and air at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PT on September 17 on CBS.
