Descendants 2 hasn’t yet debuted, but we’re already eager to know if there will be a third movie starring everyone’s favorite villain kids.

On Tuesday (July 18), People’s Choice chatted with Descendants director Kenny Ortega to find out whether the Disney Channel franchise could continue beyond the upcoming sequel, and what it would take to get a third movie underway.

“We think that we can continue on,” Ortega told us about a possible third film ahead of the sequel’s premiere. “Certainly, our writers and the Disney Channel all feel that we still have more stories that we can tell and that there is an evolution that we can continue, but it comes down to the fans. The fans for the last couple of years have been incredible on social media letting us know that they want more.”

Do you hear that Descendants fans? The future of the franchise is up to you! If you want more from Mal (Dove Cameron), Evie (Sofia Carson), Carlos (Cameron Boyce), Jay (BooBoo Stewart), and now Uma (China Anne McClain), you need to shout it from the rooftops — or just take our poll above. As for whether or not the cast is ready for round three, Ortega pointed out that if the fans love it, the stars will be ready to put their dancing shoes back on.

“We really wait to see, ‘Hey, did they show up? Did they connect? Did they make a deep enough connection for us to do it again?'” the director explained about fan input. “The cast said it yesterday in a Q&A here in New York, ‘We’d love to do it. We’d love to continue. We love our characters, we love the idea of further engaging with them and adventuring with them. And it’s really in the hands of our fans.’ ”

In fact, while there’s no storyline yet for Descendants 3, Ortega hinted that fans could impact the plot of a potential third movie.

“I think our writers Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon are just now starting to titillate on where we might go,” he said. “Honestly the fans really have an impact. What they respond to, what they connect with. The themes that river through our movies. Empowerment themes and embracing who we are themes and the themes of not abandoning where we come from. Our audience will let us know. It’s not that they write it, or that they direct it, it’s that they inform us and they inspire us as to where we go next. I’m looking for that inspiration and I’m sure Disney and our writers are as well.”

Well, there you have it! While Descendants 3 is not currently in the works, it’s certainly not off the table. All you need to do is tune into the sequel this weekend, and voice your opinions, and then let Disney Channel make some more magic.

Descendants 2 premieres on July 21, 2017 at 8 p.m. Disney Channel, ABC, Disney XD, Freeform, and Lifetime. ABC is also airing a Descendants 2 post-show special on Friday night at 10:30 p.m. called Descendants 2: ABC After-Party. Check out more details here.
