One Direction may be on a break, but its members remain as close as ever — at least according to Louis Tomlinson.

In a new interview with VICE’s Noisey, the singer opens up about the experience of One Direction morphing into a worldwide phenomena, and clears up “misconceptions” about the relationship between the bandmates.

“I think during the early days, we just had this pure naïvety,” Tomlinson tells Noisey’s Daisy Jones about 1D. “We were being hauled around the world to all these crazy places and it was such a whirlwind. And when I say naïve, it’s not like we were naïve to all the awful things, it’s just that when you’re a bit older, you’ve seen it and you’ve been through it… ”

While the members of One Direction have clearly come along way since they first joined forces on the X Factor in 2010, it’s clear that their relationship with each other has not really changed. In fact, while Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Tomlinson and Liam Payne are currently each pursuing solo ventures, the singers have always indicated that there’s no friction between them — a sentiment which Tomlinson wholeheartedly confirmed.

“But I think it was obvious to everyone that we were always five best mates on the road; it was real nice. And as time went on, we all began to understand each other,” Tomlinson tells Noisey.

Tomlinson points to his performance with Steve Aoki on the X Factor last year as an example of the band coming together in support of each other.

“There are often misconceptions, but we’re all such good mates. If you look at the X Factor final, when I performed my song with Steve [Aoki], all the boys came to support me, and I didn’t know until a couple of hours beforehand,” says Tomlinson in the interview, adding that the guys’ show of support for him was totally sincere, and that they didn’t even post a picture of the reunion online.

Explains Tomlinson: “There are always those little things that people don’t hear about.”
