Life as a Disney Channel star might seem great, but when it comes to finding a role after graduating from the channel, well, it can take some extra work.
During an interview with Rolling Stone as a part of the magazine’s “25 Under 25” series, Debby Ryan revealed that after her show Jessie wrapped in 2015, she had to work hard to break out of the Disney bubble.
“When it ended and we had done over 100 episodes of both shows, it was kind of like ‘I already feel like I’ve done a lot of the things there are to do there, and there’s so many different things in the industry. Where do I even begin?'” Ryan told Rolling Stone.
Having starred on both The Suite Life on Deck and Jessie, Ryan joined the Disney Channel at 15 and stayed on through her early ’20s. When she was ready to try her hand at different kinds of roles, however, the actress and singer said she had to push to get people to see her in a non-Disney light.
“The best part in the years since we ended [Jessie] has been being able to walk through a couple doors that have been open, and then bang down some that were closed because people saw me with mouse ears,” Ryan explained. “I got a real fresh start. Being a big deal in one specific world still does give you a bit of anonymity throughout the rest of the industry.”
Ryan’s hard work in breaking down those doors has definitely started to pay off. The young star has at least five movies lined up within the next few years, has landed a role on Netflix’s Insatiable, and has a recurring role on VH1’s Daytime Divas.
Although Ryan will always be a Disney darling to us, we are so thrilled to see her expanding her roles and moving on to such a successful acting career post-Disney.
