Descendants 2 might be what director Kenny Ortega is currently focusing on, but who can forget his biggest Disney Channel success, the High School Musical franchise?
On Tuesday (July 18), People’s Choice had a chance to talk with Ortega ahead of the Descendants 2 premiere (the movie debuts this Friday), and we couldn’t help but ask about the future of the High School Musical franchise.
With another HSM film reportedly in the works, we had to know whether or not Ortega would be on board, and his answer will make you very happy.
“I would like to. I would like to be a part of it in any way that I can. I had the time of my life it started a whole new career for me,” Ortega told us after being asked if he’d like to direct the rumored HSM 4.
“I’ve said this so many times, but I’m walking in my dreams. I’m doing exactly what I’ve wanted to do, all my life. The last decade plus has been extraordinary and that I get to play with music and dance-driven storytelling, the Disney Channel has offered me a voice and an opportunity that is rare today,” the Emmy-winning director explained.
Musicals might be all the rage when it comes to live TV productions right now, but actual musicals are still hard to find, unless you’re Ortega, who is consistently making them for the masses.
“Although we are now seeing live television, live musicals on television and a lot of dance programs, but the actual break-into-song musicals are still a rarity,” he continued. “So, I’m very grateful that we found an audience. I’m very glad that I get to do that.”
The moral of the story is that if High School Musical 4 happens, Ortega will be there, ready to go, and we couldn’t be more excited about this news.
“If High School Musical 4 worked out with my schedule and Gary and the team request my involvement, I would be very, very open to it,” he concluded.
Okay Disney Channel, it’s up to you now, let’s get started on this ASAP!
