Waiting for season 3 of Outlander is almost as unbearable as the fact that Jamie and Claire have to spend 20 years apart before being reunited on the show. Yes, we sometimes think of Jamie and Claire as real people and not TV characters, so don’t judge us!
During San Diego Comic-Con 2017, both Sam Heughan (who plays Jamie) and Caitriona Balfe (who plays Claire) revealed that season 3 was very different to film, and the fact that their characters are separated for 20 years — we know it’s heartbreaking — is definitely a part of the reason why.
“We have been very fortunate to get to know these characters over two seasons. It feels like such a long time ago we got started,” Heughan told reporters and fans during their panel via Hall of Fame.
While the the characters will be separated for a few episodes in the beginning of the season, they will reunite. That said, their lives without one another will have been full of different times, places, and people — all of which make for two very different journeys.
“This season we got to really stretch the character and go somewhere else with them,” the Scottish actor continued. “Who they are after twenty years. It’s more about the experiences than the aging.”
Balfe echoed that sentiment earlier on, explaining that she believes the time jump should focus more on the story and experiences.
“I think there’s a general arc that you want to follow. But within acting, you have to leave room for play,” Balfe teased when talking about her character’s frame of mind after 20 years.
Outlander will return for its third season on September 10, 2017 on Starz.
