The boys of One Direction were more than ready to take a break when the band began its hiatus back in 2015. Even so, Louis Tomlinson recently revealed that the feeling of knowing they were about to get some much needed time off wasn’t exactly euphoric.

In a recent interview with BBC News, Tomlinson revealed that he actually felt a little strange when he stepped off the stage during the band’s last performance before the hiatus. When asked if he felt a sense of freedom after the band’s final scheduled performance at the X-Factor in 2015, Tomlinson was quick to say that it was quite the opposite.

“It was a very emotional time. It was a really weird felling, because [the break] is by no means definitive, so it leaves you in a place where you’re like, ‘OK, what comes next?’” explained Tomlinson.

Like fellow 1D members Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne, what came next for Tomlinson was working on his own solo material.

The singer, who walked away from 1D having received more writing credits than any of his bandmates, has been hard at work creating music, and it seems like his efforts have paid off.

Tomlinson’s latest offering— a duet with singer/songwriter Bebe Rexha (Eminem & Rihanna’s “Monster,” David Guetta and Nicki Minaj’s “Hey Mama”) called “Back To You”— may very well be the pop star’s best single yet.

If you, like us, just can’t wait to see what Tomlinson’s solo album sounds like, the good news is we might not have to wait long to experience it. In the same interview, Tomlinson also revealed that “ideally it’s coming at the end of the year.”

Here’s hoping he’s able to meet that personal deadline!
