The good news just keeps coming for Shawn Mendes and his fans.
When he’s not finding time for meet and greets with his fans while on tour, Mendes is proving that his music is golden — or in this case platinum.
The singer took to Twitter on Tuesday (Aug. 2) to announce that his latest album, Illuminate, just achieved a very impressive feat.
“Also, Illuminate has gone platinum and that’s unbelievable! Thank you so much for this! X,” Mendes shared on Twitter alongside an image of his Illuminate cover on Tuesday.
Mendes’ Illuminate going platinum means that the album has sold 1 million copies, which is just insane.
Mendes isn’t a stranger to this much success, however, seeing as his first solo album, Handwritten, which dropped back in 2015, also went platinum in the United States. Clearly, the Canadian singer knows what he’s doing and we’re so glad to see he’s getting all the praise he deserves.
In a Q&A with fans that was shared on Twitter, Mendes recently opened up about the songs on his album — and cleared up one misconception in particular about his single, “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” While fans assumed the song was about a girl in Mendes’ life, the “Mercy” singer singer explained it was actually inspired by a character in a movie script he read.
“I was reading a movie script that I was possibly going to be in and the girl who ‘my character’ kind of falls in love with, I actually really loved, like I really liked the character,” Mendes told a group of fans about the inspiration behind the track during a special Q&A in July before his Vancouver performance.
