We can’t imagine anyone but Alexis Bledel bringing Rory Gilmore to life, but it turns out, casting directors for Gilmore Girls didn’t just hand the role to her right off the bat.

Bledel recently stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers where she talked about the audition process for Gilmore Girls, revealing that she auditioned not once, but six times before scoring the part of Rory Gilmore.

“I was a student at NYU, and they kept calling me back up to audition,” recalled Bledel. “Oddly, I wasn’t a very seasoned actor at all. I didn’t know the process.

Because Bledel was a bit green at the time, she didn’t realize that it was perfectly normal to get called back to audition multiple times. Because of that, the actress admits she got a bit impatient with the process and even let her annoyance slip to casting directors

“I had a little attitude, and our boss really liked that a lot,” continued Bledel, presumably referring to Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman Palladino. “She was like, ‘That’s our girl!’ I was like, ‘Are you guys going to bring me back again…?’ and she was like, ‘I like that, that’s perfect.’”

That little bit of sass might have cost Bledel the gig, but we love that the Gilmore Girls showrunners saw it as quintessentially Rory. Though Rory’s known for being the quiet, sweet bookworm of Stars Hollow when we first meet her, there’s no denying she’s got no problem sticking up for herself.

After all, who could forget the time when she stood up to the Chilton headmaster and argued that she shouldn’t be punished for wanting to read instead of socialize during lunch? Or the times she had to stand her ground with Lorelai (Lauren Graham)?

There’s always been a fierce quality to Rory behind that initial sweet demeanor, and we love that it sounds as though Alexis Bledel shared that same quality with her on-screen character right from the get go!
