Bones viewers will undoubtedly remember Zack Addy (Eric Millegan), the smart young assistant we saw working alongside Dr. Brennan (Emily Deschanel) toward the beginning of the series. Unfortunately, Zack was written off of the FOX drama toward the end of the fourth season after it was revealed that he’d been working for the bad guy all along.
Now, Bones creator Hart Hanson is finally letting fans in on why the drama decided to part with the beloved character.
As with many decisions that get made behind the scenes, the call to write off Zack and introduce the concept of rotating interns was ultimately made in an effort to make sure the plot of Bones was always advancing. That said, the departure was mainly necessary because it allowed the show to dedicate more time to Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan as a crime-solving duo, Hanson revealed during a recent Reddit AMA.
“The fast answer is that Brennan and Booth had a kind of magic that made us (and the audience) want to see them working together out in the field,” explained Hanson. “In order to make the show on a decent budget, we had to spend a certain amount of time IN the lab (on stage). In order to do that, we needed to bring characters and stories into the lab, and the Rotating Interns was the best way to do that.”
The idea of rotating interns might have helped keep things interesting for Brennan and Booth while they were working in the lab, but like the rest of the fanbase, Hanson agrees that it was tough to write Zack off.
“It was a hard decision. Zack was one of my favorite creations of all time,” said Hanson.
Luckily for fans, the character wasn’t completely gone. In fact, Zack made quite a few appearances throughout the run of the series, and even returned for a number of episodes before the show wrapped up for good earlier this year to close out his storyline. Now, fans can rest easy knowing they have closure as far as Zack’s time on Bones is concerned — both on-screen and off.
