To a lot of people, Nina Dobrev is a TV actress first and movie actress second, and that’s mainly because the Bulgarian-Canadian actress has been seen on TV way more throughout her career.
After leaving The Vampire Diaries in 2015, and coming back for some of the finale season in 2017, fans of Dobrev have been waiting for her to make a big splash in the movie realm. The reason why you haven’t seen much of Dobrev on the big screen over the past few years, however, is actually by choice — and it’s a good choice.
While Dobrev has appeared in movies, including Return of Xander Cage and the upcoming Crash Pad, she’s keeping the roles to a minimum because she can. During an interview Harper’s Bazaar, the Degrassi alum admitted that “the things I want to do aren’t necessarily the things that are expected of me.”
While fans are screaming for more Dobrev all the time, the actress, who has two more movies in the works, including Departures, is being really smart about her acting future.
“I don’t want to play a teenager anymore,” she explained to the publication. “I want to play adult roles and be challenged and work with great filmmakers and tell incredible stories, and that has meant being really picky.”
Making movies you love and feel passionate about isn’t always an option, so Dobrev’s goal of staying true to herself and challenging herself is awesome. Sure, we don’t get to see her all the time like we did on TVD, but when she does appear in a film, it will be that much more exciting.
Oh, and in case you though Dobrev was just sitting around in between filming her three movies post-TVD, you’d be wrong. The 28-year-old actress is also planning to produce a film, and co-write another according to Harper’s Bazaar.
You go, Nina!
