Chicago Fire season 5 capped off with some major cliffhangers, and although we will get to see the fallout from those events when the drama returns this fall, there will also be a flash forward to move the story ahead.
Chicago Fire co-creator Derek Haas confirmed the shift in time on Twitter earlier this month, after a fan asked whether there would be a “flashback, dream sequence, or time jump” in the season six premiere episode.
“There will be a time jump in this episode and maybe something else,” Haas replied, confirming that at least one of the three things the fan proposed will take place in the premiere episode. What the “something else” portion of his reply could mean, however, is something we will have to wait and see unfold.
Haas later expanded on the season 6 time jump plans during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, and it makes us even more excited to see what’s in store for the members of Firehouse 51, including Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund), come this fall.
“Those events will play out over the teaser and then when we come back, we are going to do a time jump of a couple of months to (a) to line us more up with summer and (b) to get into… the way I always pitch it is, we’re not doing the 23rd episode of season five, we’re launching season six and hopefully launching it out of a canon so then we’re going to go right into season six,” Haas told The Hollywood Reporter about next season.
In other words, not only will there be a time jump, but also it will set the story of Chicago Fire closer to the summer months, and give the show a fresh start as it ventures into its sixth season. Now, all we need is our very own time jump to the Chicago Fire premiere next month!
Chicago Fire returns for season 6 on September 28, 2017 on NBC.
