Chrissy Teigen is one of the most candid celebrities on social media these days. And while her openness sometimes lands her in hot water, it’s the reason we love her.
Whether she’s weighing in on issues close to her heart, or giving us updates on her beautiful family, which includes husband John Legend and daughter Luna, it’s clear she’s got no problem sharing her life with her fans.
As open as she is on social media, however, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Teigen. To celebrate one of our favorite celebrities, we’ve dug up a list of five facts about the Hollywood A-lister’s journey to stardom that might surprise you. Check them out below!
1. She was discovered while working in a surf shop in California.
During an episode of When I Was 17 for MTV, Teigen revealed that she took a job at a surfshop as a salesgirl at age 17 after her family moved from Washington state to California. While she wasn’t thrilled about the shift (turns out, Chrissy Teigen doesn’t like water!), it worked out in her favor as she was discovered by a model scout at the surfshop, kick-starting her path to fame.
2. She’s actually terrible at lip syncing.
Tigen may host Spike’s Lip Sync Battle, but the model admitted in an interview that she’d actually be a terrible contestant on her own show! “There are too many things to think about,” Teigen told Nylon . “It’s lip-syncing, but there’s also dancers, and then you have to dance…you really have to enunciate. There’s an art to it, and I can’t do it.”
3. Her first cookbook was a best-seller.
Teigen’s Cravings: Receipes for All the Food You Want to Eat definitely lives up to its name. From recipes like John’s Fried Chicken Wings with Spicy Honey Butter to mouthwatering breakfast sandwiches, there’s no denying the model spent a lot of time deciding which delicious recipes she cooks at home would make the cut. And if it’s become one of your favorite cookbooks, Teigen would consider that a job well done. “I wanted it to be able to sit next to David Chang’s Momofuku cookbook, which I love cooking out of, and Ina’s How Easy Is That?, which is one of my favorite books of hers, and Paula [Deen]’s books, and Giada [DeLaurentiis]’s,” said Teigen in an interview with Eater. “I wanted people to know that these are really the recipes that we love at home.”
4. She’s a seasoned pro when it comes to hosting.
These days you can catch Teigen co-hosting Spike’s Lip Sync Battle alongside LL Cool J, but the popular competition series isn’t the model’s first foray into hosting. Teigen’s first hosting gig actually came in 2013 when she was tapped to take part in VH1’s reality competition series, Model Employee. She’s also no stranger to judging competitions. In 2014 Teigen was one of three judges on MTV’s cooking competition, Snack-Off. Prior to signing on to Lip Sync Battle, Teigen also briefly collaborated with fellow supermodel Tyra Banks on Banks’ short-lived lifestyle series, FABLife. Given her impressive resume, and her candid nature, it’s no wonder that Teigen keeps getting tapped to appear in all of these competition series!
5. She is convinced that the secret to her online success is honesty.
There’s no denying Teigen is beloved for her refreshing honesty, but the model admits that it took a while for the public to accept her for it. In an interview with Mashable, Teigen explained that she wasn’t always revered for saying whatever she wanted online. When she was first starting out, people only knew her for her modeling, not her personality. The more she tweeted, however, the more Teigen says her audience started to realize she was just showing different sides of herself. “You kind of have to come out the gate really showing different sides of your personality,” said Teigen of building her online presence. “and people start to realize that that’s just you and they start to accept you.”
