With the Chicago P.D. season 5 premiere is just around the corner, we’re still not ready to say goodbye to Sophia Bush’s Detective Erin Lindsay — but at least now we know how the character will be written off.

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Bush would be leaving the cop drama after four seasons, and although she will be missed — by fans and castmates, including Jon Seda, who will be returning for the upcoming season — we can now rest a little easier knowing her departure won’t be too dramatic. The last time we saw Det. Lindsay, she was being urged to take a new job (by her surrogate father Hank Voigt played by Jason Beghe). While there’s been speculation that the job would be the setup for Bush’s exit, nothing was made official until now.

In a new interview with TV Line, Chicago P.D. executive producer Rick Eid has confirmed that when the series picks back up, Lindsay will have taken the job in New York as a part of the counter-terrorism unit, leaving her former colleagues grappling with her absence.

“She’s an important part of the show and in the character’s lives, so whatever makes sense for the characters is how we address it,” Eid told TV Line about Bush’s character’s departure storyline. He then added that Det. Lindsay’s departure will be handled “deftly and elegantly.”

Ever since it was confirmed that Bush would be leaving the series, we’ve been mentally preparing to see her go, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy for fans, or the other characters on the show.

In fact, the showrunner previously talked about each character feeling her absence “at different times” and how Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) will definitely feel the loss in a “meaningful way,” which makes us even more on edge about Chicago P.D.’s September return.

While there’s no word yet on whether Bush will appear in the season 5 premiere or any upcoming episodes, fans can feel a little better knowing that Lindsay taking a job in another state leaves the door open for the character return down the line.

Are you ready to say goodbye to Det. Lindsay?

Chicago P.D. returns for season 5 on September 27, 2017 at 10 p.m. on NBC.
