When American Idol returns on its new network, ABC, Katy Perry will be at the judge’s table, and she knows exactly who she wants by her side to help contestants on their journey.

For starters, Perry is really “pulling for Lionel [Richie]” according to an interview with Ryan Seacrest — who will be back to host the singing competition — during his Wednesday (Aug. 23) radio show, On Air With Ryan Seacrest. Her second judge choice is none other than the American singing sensation, Charlie Puth.

“Charlie, I think, is an interesting play because Charlie Puth is someone new to the general public of America,” Perry told revealed to the radio host on this week’s On Air With Ryan Seacrest interview.

It’s Puth’s freshness that Perry thinks will be a good fit for the show, and help balance about the rest of the judging table.

“Obviously he has his own big fan base, but I think he’s really talented. He’s a writer, he’s a producer, he’s young, he’s hip, he’s fresh,” she explained. “Between Lionel and me, it would be nice to have someone a little more fresh.”

Since Perry also considers herself the Simon Cowell of the reboot, having the New Jersey native alongside her would be a great way to get all types of personalities on the show.

“I really respect him. As much as people said, ‘Oh, he’s grumpy or he’s mean,’ he was just truthful, you know? He’s seen it. I don’t need to be there to win the popular race,” Perry said of Cowell, who was on the FOX version of the series.

Since the rest of the judges table has yet to be announced, perhaps ABC will listen to Perry’s pleas about who she wants to sit beside her. Who do you think should be Perry’s fellow judges come the 2017-2018 season?
