This year’s Katy Perry-hosted MTV Video Music Awards was full of great acts (including one by Perry herself) — but there was one performer in particular who’s really got everyone talking: Lorde.

The New Zealand native surprised everyone when she took the stage on Sunday night (Aug. 27) and did something a little different. Instead of singing, Lorde opted to dance to her hit song, “Homemade Dynamite.” It seemed totally random at the time, but come to find out there was an actual reason for her interpretive dance moves, which the powerful vocalist took to to Twitter to explain.

“MOON PRINCESS 🍬,” Lorde tweeted on Sunday with a photo of herself from the red carpet in a gorgeous purple gown.

The “Green Light” singer — who was nominated for two VMAs this year — followed up her comment about her red carpet style with another tweet explaining that looks can be deceiving, and though she looked as glam and glowing as ever at the show, she was actually really sick.

“You can’t tell in these pictures but i have the flu so bad i needed an IV,” she said with the hashtag #showgoeson.

Based on her tweet,  it’s clear that the reason Lorde had to rely solely on her moves on stage was due to the fact that the singer, while too sick to sing, still wanted to do something for her fans during one of the music’s biggest nights.

Now all we can do is hope for Lorde to get well soon and grace us with a live singing performance ASAP.
