Grey’s Anatomy might be heading into season 14, but when it comes to storylines and themes next season, there could be some reflections of the past — especially when it comes to the series’ leading lady, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).
Ahead of the drama’s return this month, Grey’s executive producer Debbie Allen talked to TVLine about what’s in store for the docs at Grey Sloan Memorial. In addition to revealing what happens in the aftermath of season 13’s cliffhanger, Allen revealed to TVLine that the upcoming season will find Meredith “going through her own self-analysis and her own rediscovery of herself.”
What does this mean exactly? Well, you’ll have to tune into the two-hour premiere at the end of the month to know for sure, but we do have a few ideas, especially after Allen teased this season will be “more like it was in the beginning.”
When we first met Meredith and the entire cast of Grey’s Anatomy, everyone was trying to find their way in the hospital. For Meredith she was an intern trying to figure out how not to be in her mother’s shadow, and although she’s very established nowadays, she always seems to have something else to learn about herself or figure out when it comes to who she is.
Plus, with all that has happened throughout the series to Meredith and around her, it makes sense that she’d go back to her roots and reexamine what she wants — whether that’s in her personal life (aka with Nathan Riggs or anyone else for that matter), or with her work.
No matter what Meredith does this season, it’s clear that Grey’s will be more upbeat according to Allen and a previous interview with Jessica Capshaw, who told E! News that the first few episodes are, “so much fun and very, sort of, going back to first and second season Grey’s.”
Grey’s Anatomy returns for season 14 on September 28, 2017 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
