Shawn Mendes has big plans for his MTV Unplugged debut tonight.
After two years off the air, MTV Unplugged, which began back in 1989 and showcased artists in an intimate acoustic music series, will be back, and with Mendes as the first featured artist, things are going to be good. When the Canadian singer hits the stage, he will be performing a few tracks, one of which his fans know really well: “Stitches.”
“Honestly — which is weird and funny and may be a thing for other performers — ‘Stitches’ is the hardest song for me to perform,” Mendes told MTV News’ Gaby Wilson when talking about the track. “Not because it’s super high or super vocally challenging — it’s just because it has this weight behind it.”
Although his fans might know “Stitches” by heart at this point — it first came out in 2015 and has been a huge hit for Mendes — the Unplugged performance of the song will feature a reimagined, stripped-down version that Mendes thinks is great.
“But we’re doing a version tonight where I’m on the piano and it’s just me and my guitar player. It’s really, really beautiful and I think it’ll be really nice,” Mendes said. “When a song is great you can kind of just take it from the guitar to the piano and it sounds just as good, if not better. It was super easy.”
Season 24 of MTV Unplugged airs Friday, September 8, 2017 at 8 p.m. on MTV.
