The Big Bang Theory may be heading into season 11, but the popularity of the sitcom continues to hold strong. So what is it about the CBS series that continues to top ratings and pull in viewers year after year? Well, Jim Parsons has an idea as to why the show is so popular, and it’s pretty spot on.

Ahead of The Big Bang Theory’s season 11 premiere later this month, Parsons, who plays Sheldon Cooper — aka everyone’s favorite brilliant theoretical physicist, who just doesn’t understand social cues, and loves his me-ma — sat down with Parade to talk all about the future of the show, and its spinoff series, Young Sheldon. Although fans can’t wait to see what Young Sheldon has to offer (it will be narrated by Parsons), the bigger pull is still The Big Bang Theory, as it should be.

TBBT is the number one comedy on television in America, and has already been picked up for a 12th season, well before its 11th season has even started. So, what is it about the show that keeps fans coming back? According to the Parsons, The Big Bang Theory is so popular because the writing is the “perfect balance between thoughtful and funny.” Parsons also cited the consistent nature of the show when explaining why it continues to be such a hit.

“We’re not solving a new mystery every week, so you’re not gonna get a fresh story in that way,” Parsons told Parade about TBBT’s success. “If you don’t want to watch these particular characters relate to each other, you’re not gonna want to come back.”

With so many complex, intelligent and hilarious characters to choose from — including Sheldon, who won’t ever let anyone sit in his spot, to Penny (Kaley Cuoco), who started as a wannabee actress and grew into a smart, self-sufficient pharmaceutical rep, who can somehow spar with all of the nerds across the hall — there is definitely a character for everyone to love.

Which character is your favorite to watch on The Big Bang Theory?

The Big Bang Theory returns for season 11 on September 25, 2017 on CBS.
