The good news is co-creator Christopher Lloyd is already ruminating over the perfect ending that’ll hopefully leave fans satisfied.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Lloyd revealed that while nothing is set in stone yet, the minds behind Modern Family have been throwing around ideas with regards to how they might like to see the series come to a close.
“We’ve talked about areas that we want to go and tonally what we want to do,” teased Lloyd.
One thing fans won’t have to worry about, however, is seeing the beloved members of the Pritchett, Delgado-Pritchett, Dunphy, or Tucker families split apart.
Though the Modern Family team has discussed ending things with a huge plot twist, Lloyd revealed that they’re leaning toward ending the series by bringing things full circle.
“[We’ll ultimately] end the show the way we started it in the pilot, with a big family event,” teased Lloyd.
Knowing the Pritchett family and all its branches, a “big family event” could really mean anything. After all, the series has specialized in big family events throughout the years, including the pilot which first introduced viewers to the sitcom’s hilarious characters, including Jay (Ed O’ Neill), Haley, (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), and more — only to reveal in the episode’s final moments that they’re all related.
As the series progressed, the family get-togethers got bigger and more impactful. In season three, when the family goes on their big trip to Disneyland, Jay (Ed O’Neill), Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell share a touching moment in the Lincoln Room where Jay reveals how much he sacrificed when the kids were younger to make sure they grew up surrounded by a loving family. In season five, we saw the series break down the layers of Alex’s (Ariel Winter) personality and learned that there’s more to her book-worm persona than we originally thought after the youngest Dunphy daughter goes to therapy to address her anxiety. And of course, who could forget the big moment in season four when Gloria (Sofia Vergara) finally delivers little baby Joe?
Modern Family has certainly served up some huge family moments over the years, but we’ll be excited to see what Lloyd and the team have in store for us when it comes to the huge family event set to take place in the series finale!
