When New Girl returns for its seventh and final season, there might be a major leap forward in time.
After season 6 of New Girl ended in April, fans cried out for more from Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) and her loft mates, and ahead of Fox upfronts in May, they got their wish. The bad news is that the next season will only be eight episodes, but the good — or at least interesting — part is that there could be a big time jump to kick things off.
According to Deadline, the show’s creator Liz Meriwether pitched a very different season 7 storyline, which convinced Fox to move forward with the comedy’s final season. It reportedly features a time jump, picking up three years after the season 6 finale. Yes, three years!
That would mean fans would see Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone) with a child (since they were expecting in season 6), we’d find out what happened after Winston (Lamorne Morris) called his dad, and the fate of Jess and Nick’s (Jake Johnson) romance.
Seriously, a lot can happen in three years, so jumping that far ahead brings a lot of possibilities for the characters on New Girl.
Although a time jump hasn’t been confirmed by Fox yet, the possibility of seeing Jess and her band of crazy, sweet friends in the future is really exciting. It’s a little bit scary, but mostly exciting.
Plus, now that Morris has tweeted about the series getting ready to start filming again, we’re hoping there will be more updates from the cast, and maybe a tease or two of what each character’s life will look like come season 7.
What do you want to see in the final season of New Girl? Are you happy about a potential time jump?
