New Girl fans were thrilled to find out back in May that the series was coming back for a seventh and final season, but what if the show had wrapped up in season 6? The show’s executive producers had an alternate ending ready to go just in case.

Fans who tuned into the season 6 finale of New Girl probably noticed that the show wrapped up a number of key storylines — that’s because the team behind the show had no idea whether they would be back for another season until very late in the game. In fact, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producers Dave Finkel and Brett Baer revealed that they had a final ending scene for season 6 in mind that would have put a wrap on New Girl — but they decided not to use it in case the show returned for one last run.

“There was a coda we shot that we didn’t use because it definitely had more of an [end]. … And the studio and the network didn’t ask for that coda either, which to me was an indication that there might be more to come,” Baer told Entertainment Weekly back in April about filming the end of season 6.

As for what the final, final scene would’ve been? Baer said, “The coda sort of picked up on the pregnancy stuff and it was a group scene with the baby that kind of felt a little bit more…”

“End-y,” Finkel added. In order to have the group around a baby there would’ve been a time jump, which Finkel revealed would’ve been nine months forward.

The loft crew gathered around Scmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece’s (Hannah Simone) newborn would’ve tied things up in a nice bow, but luckily fans get one final season come 2018, which could still feature a scene with everyone around a child… just not a newborn.

According to Deadline, season 7 is most likely going to have a three-year jump based on the show’s creator Liz Meriwether’s pitch to Fox, which would mean Schmidt would be in full-on dad mode, and the rest of the loft mates would be way more grown up.

That means toddler hangouts instead of baby visits, and we’re very interested to see who is watching that little guy or girl on a regular basis. Maybe Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) will team up for babysitting duty, while Winston (Lamorne Morris) will be starting a family of his own. The possibilities are endless, and yet, we really have no idea what the writers are going to do.

What do you think of the alternative season 6 ending? Would you have been happy with everyone smiling at a baby?
