While Grey’s Anatomy’s has made it to its 14th season, the future for the ABC drama always seems to be on our minds — especially with regards to what will happen when the medical drama comes to an end.

Ellen Pompeo, who plays the series’ lead, Dr. Meredith Grey, recently told Variety that Grey’s Anatomy will go off the air whenever she decides to exit, saying, “the story is about Meredith Grey’s journey and when I’m done, the show will end.” Thankfully, we’re not expecting Pompeo to depart the drama anytime soon, but if and when she does, we’d like to think the saga of Grey’s Anatomy could continue on.

After all, though Pompeo is undoubtedly the glue that holds Grey’s together, the series boasts a host of incredible characters whose stories we’d be happy to watch for years to come. Sure, Shonda Rhimes is already working on a Grey’s spinoff that’s focused on firefighters in Seattle (soon-to-be-former Grey’s regular Jason George, who plays Dr. Ben Warren, is set to shift over to the new series), but we’re talking about a show that keeps the doctor world created on Grey’s alive, even when its lead says goodbye forever.

So who could take the torch from Pompeo and carry Grey’s Anatomy forward? We’ve rounded up a list of candidates. Take a look below, and vote for who you think would be a great Grey’s Anatomy spinoff lead!

Jesse Williams (Dr. Jackson Avery)

Do we really need to explain why Jesse Williams’ Dr. Jackson Avery should get his own show? As soon as the actor joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2009, his character quickly became a fan favorite. While there’s no question that Grey’s Anatomy would lose some viewers without Pompeo on the cast, we’re confident Williams could draw them back in with his undeniable on-screen presence.

Justin Chambers (Dr. Alex Karev)

(ABC/Richard Cartwright)

Justin Chambers has been playing Dr. Alex Karev since the show first started back in 2005 and he’s continued to make fans love him no matter what ups and downs his character has faced. Given his veteran status on the show, if Ellen Pompeo really were to leave, he’d be the natural choice for a successor.
