Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Burrell revealed that if the series were to end after 10 seasons as is the current rumor, the one thing he’d like the show to explore is the idea of the Dunphy clan finding their identities.
With Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Alex (Ariel Winter) away at college, and Luke (Nolan Gould) not far behind, Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Burrell) will soon be empty nesters. It’s sure to come as a big change for the family, but as Burrell explains, it’s a great opportunity for the Dunphys to figure out who they are in the midst of a new chapter in their lives.
“It really is a hard thing in real life, people finding their identities [when they’re] without their kids, and also the kids finding their identities as they become more independent,” said Burrell. “I think that’s really what we’re going to be exploring over the next two years. What do the kids become? What becomes their paths and also what of Phil and Claire? What are they gonna decide to do on their own?”
This year’s season opener finds the family journeying to Lake Tahoe to take in the eclipse. While there, we get a glimpse of Claire and Phil trying to show the rest of the family that they’re still as adventurous as they were before they became parents. The result was an incredibly hilarious scene that featured Phil water jet packing 20 feet over the lake.
With Claire and Phil’s path to self-discovery off to such a dramatic start, we’ll be curious to see what other crazy things they end up trying as they adjust to the idea that their kids are almost all grown up now!
